The LMU (Ludwig-Maximilians-University) is the university with the most research fundings from the  European Research Council (ERC) amongst the German universities. Since 2007 the European Union advances and rewards outstanding scientists with these ERC grants. Having received 10 out of 1069 grants, the LMU is no. 13 amongst all European institutions.

In this regard ERC assigned Advanced Investigator grants for well-established scientists, whose projects are risky but promsing and possibly very profitable to Prof. Dr. Paul Knochel, Prof. Dr. Christoph Bode, Prof. Dr. med. Erika von Mutius, Prof. Dr. Donald Bruce Dingwell und Prof. Dr. Ferenc Krausz. Starting Grants, targeting young excellent researchers, were given to Dr. Katja Strässer, Prof. Dr. Jens Michaelis, PD Dr. David Vöhringer; Prof. Dr. Dieter Braun und Dr. Michael Cysouw.
