According to the World Reputation Ranking compiled by the Times Higher Education Magazine, LMU occupies the top position among universities in Germany. Rated 48th in the world, LMU is regarded as one of the most renowned universities on the European continent – after the ETH Zürich, which is ranked 24th overall. The new ranking, which is appearing for the first time this year, evaluates the standing that universities enjoy among their peers for the quality of their teaching and research. The list is based on the results of a survey of experienced and highly regarded academics from all over the world.

“The Reputation Ranking confirms that LMU has a high reputation internationally – particularly as a result of our success in the Excellence Initiative,” says LMU President Professor Bernd Huber. “Its international reputation is an important motivation for the success of any university. Only those institutions that have established an international profile can hope to hold their own in the global competition for the best students and researchers.” The LMU is one of 28 universities and universities of apllied sciences, which is served by the Bayerische Patentallianz GmbH, which acts a the central patent and marketing agency.
The Times Higher Education World Reputation Ranking 2011 is based on a worldwide survey carried out among scholars and scientists last year. A total of 13,888 responses were received from participants in 131 countries. On average, the respondents had more than 16 years of university experience and had published over 50 research papers. These figures mean that the new ranking is the largest and most comprehensive assessment of university reputations yet carried out. The Reputation Ranking is based on two of the 13 performance indicators used in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010-11. For example, respondents were asked to name the universities that they judged to be regional and international leaders in their own specific areas of expertise. Participants could choose from several hundred fields and more than 6,000 institutions.
